Don Thompson

Don Thompson is a consultant in the fields of negotiation and conflict management. Through his company, Idea Matrix, he advises clients on a wide range of issues with a focus on enhancing their organizational capacity to negotiate and manage strategic business relationships. He also designs and delivers negotiation programs for corporate executives and managers. A partial list of clients includes AstraZeneca, Bank of Montreal, Canadian Tire Corporation, Celestica, CIBC, Falconbridge, Hewlett Packard, Honda, Janssen Ortho, INCO, Maple Leaf Foods, Motorola and Ontario Power Generation (Nuclear Division). Mr. Thompson regularly provides training on improving negotiation techniques to corporate clients worldwide. He also serves as an advisor, consultant and trainer in the public sector through the international non-profit Conflict Management Group. He conducts training for Departments within the Canadian Federal Government. Before becoming involved in the field of negotiation, Mr. Thompson worked for The Molson Companies Limited as V.P. of Public Affairs and V.P. of Marketing. He was also Senior V.P. and General Manager of Molson’s sports and entertainment division, Molstar, where he was responsible for negotiating and managing the sports and broadcast rights agreements with the National Hockey League, the Canadian NHL clubs and Canadian broadcasters. Mr. Thompson has also served as the Marketing V.P. for the Niagara Institute, a non-profit organization that offers leadership and training programs for executives. Mr. Thompson has instructed at annual summer negotiation workshops conducted at Harvard Law School. Although primarily based in North America, Mr. Thompson has also worked in Asia and Europe. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto with an M.A. in history.
